Events in OxfordThe information presented on the Oxford pages is based on the Oxford City Centre Street Map and Guide 1999 SOME OXFORD TRADITIONS: At 9.05pm (9pm "Oxford time") every evening Great Tom, Christ Church College's famous bell, rings out 101 times. This marks the time when traditionally the college gates were shut and the 101 students expected to be inside. On May Day (always May 1st) Magdalen College choir sing madrigals from the top of the 15th century bell-tower at 6am, and Morris dancers continue the celebration of Spring with displays in the High Street. Examination Schools: Final exams are held here between late May and early June and students dress formally in gowns and mortarboards. Traditional boating contests between the colleges are held on the Thames: Torpids are held in March and Eights Week is in May. The Encaenia is held on the first Wednesday in the week following full Trinity term, and is a colourful ceremony to confer honorary degrees and commemorate benefactors. The University's leading figures walk in procession along Broad Street.
