The City of Chester Visitor Guide

The information presented on these Chester pages is based on the Chester City Centre Street Map and Guide 1999

Chester in the county of Cheshire, England, is one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom. Chester has an important Roman, medieval and Tudor history and heritage, and much of it is well preserved.

Much of the Roman influence remains, including the Roman Amphitheatre, the only shrine to the goddess Minerva preserved in its original site, and, of course, the City Walls, which are the only complete city walls in Britain. The Dewa Roman Experience allows you to relive the sights, sounds and smells of daily Roman life.

The Rows were originally built in the thirteenth century, but nobody really knows why or for what purpose. The Rows help to lend Chester a character and atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else, and are populated with some interesting and unusual shops.

The Chester Visitor Centre is probably the best place to begin a visit to the city. Other places well worth seeing include Chester Cathedral with its nine century history, the Grosvenor Museum, the beautiful Grosvenor Park, the On The Air Broadcasting Museum, Cheshire Military Museum, and the Toy and Doll Museum. And don't forget the 2 mile walk around the City Walls with its many interesting structures and views.

There are plenty of walking tours, open top bus tours and cruises on the River Dee to help you see Chester at its best. Chester also has a thriving night life, with the award-winning Gateway Theatre, plenty of music and entertainment venues, and a busy events schedule.
